Unbalanced Forces is a collective project that i’ve been working on for the past few months with some colleagues. it opens for the SNAG gallery tour on Friday, May 22nd at Bambi Gallery in Philadelphia, from 6-9:30pm.
this exhibition presents nine emerging artists from various cities who have joined to create a body of collectively constructed jewelry and objects, inspired by the tradition of the exquisite corpse. artists Sarah Abramson, Kate Bauman, Nikky Bergman, Kit Burke-Smith, Maureen Duffy, Colleen Heineman, Margaret Semrau, Jessica Stephens, and Kristi Sword have created a show that is absurd and playful in both its method and form. their work is full of curiosity and untraditional methods, but attempts to address traditional formalities by both its references and materials. the show’s title echoes Newton’s first law of motion, which states that an object continues in its established state or motion indefinitely, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
the show will run through June 27th.

Kate Mess (formerly Kate Bauman) is a contemporary jeweler, artist, and designer musing on enamel, metal, pattern and ornamentation in rugged and gorgeous midcoast Maine. Inspired to make jewelry that pushes boundaries and offers new definitions of adornment, she is intrigued by clever design, color, pattern, and silhouette.
